History
Founded in 1961 by its former President, Mr. Justo E. Manalo, the firm entered the contracting trade as a sole proprietorship. its one single large asset back then was a small crawler crane that is used for constructing bridges and waterfront structures.
In December 1969, the company was incorporated with a capitalization of P1,000,000,00. It established a foothold in the industrial market with the construction of industrial and commercial buildings and facilities. Among its major clients then were Elizalde Iron & Steel Works, Riverside Mills Corporation, and Phillipines blooming Mills.
In 1974, the firm began as a contractorfor major flood control projects under the Bureau of Public Works. This signaled the numerous other critical projects that the firm has completed for the Philippine Government since that time. In 1978, it was selected as one of the 13 most outstanding public works contractor.
In 1974, it added another field of specialty in its line of construction Portworks. Among its first portwork projects was an R. C. Pier for Petrophil Corporation, construction of the Syncrolift Dry-dock and Transfer System for BASECO, Bataan and the BCI Wharf for the Maritime Co. of the Philippines.
It was also during this period that the firm became a noted name in the sub specialty of pile driving. With the onset of the 80’s, the firm reached for greater challenges when in 1983 together with a co-venturer, Fascon (Mla), Inc., it was awarded the contract to build the Port of Cagayan de Oro. The P123,000,000.00 facility which was the first single largest project awarded to the firm, took 3 years to complete. Today, the province of Mindanao still benefits tremendously from the construction of the port.
The firm further stretched out its clientele when in the early 80’s, it entered into contracts with the U.S.Department of the Navy and the U.S. Airforce for the construction of vital facilities in Subic Naval Base and Clark Air Base. The rigid technical requirements of these projects once more proved that the firm could be equally competitive to international contract standards.
The latter part of the 80’s saw a growing diversification of projects for J. E. MANALO & CO., INC. It undertook simultaneous works for the MWSS, DPWH, the U. S. Navy, U.S. Airforce, Republic-Asahi Glass Corporation, Corregidor Foundations, Inc., Purefoods Flour Mills, Manila Mining Corporation, among others.
Its range of construction activities varied from portworks, roads and bridges, sewerage and water supply system, to industrial plants and buildings. With the onset of the 90’s, the firm completed P 70,000,000.00 worth of roads, bridges and interchange facility along the South Expressway for the Science Park of the Philippines, Inc. In the year 1995, the firm achieved another milestone in its history when it completed the DAVAO FISHING PORT COMPLEX together with EEI Corporation, one year ahead of schedule.
Between 1997 to 2000, the firm completed major projects for Southern Electric Corp. and Petron Corporation. It was in these two projects that its commitment to safety, quality and on time completion was reaffirmed.
Southern Electric Corp. awarded a contract to build a 15-kilometer Road and a Bridge to link their power plant located at pagbilao Island to the mainland in Quezon while Daelim Engineering of Korea as main contractor for Petron Corp. awarded to J. E. Manalo & Co., Inc. a contract to build a 178 meters extension of the existing Petron Product Pier.
What made this project extremely critical was that no disruption or accident was caused to the ongoing operations of the LPG loading and unloading facility throughout the construction period.
In April 2009, the company achieved another milestone in its continuing effort to provide quality service to its customers when it was awarded a Certificate of Registration to ISO 9001:2000. This Certificate of Registration has since been upgraded to ISO 9001:2015.
In November 2011, the company was awarded its first billion peso single project by the Golden Bay Grain Terminal Corporation, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation. The project involves the design and construction of a Grain Terminal which includes the Pier Facilities, Site Development, Roadworks, Flat Warehouses, Silo Tower Foundations and other support structures.
J. E. Manalo’s continued support and affiliation to the construction industry remains strong. Its President & CEO, Mr. Augusto F. Manalo is the former President of the Phil. Constructors Association. He has also served as President of the Association of Carriers and Equipment Lessors (ACEL) in 1998-1999. Currently our V.P. for Plant and Equipment, Mr. Justo F. Manalo Jr. serves as a Director of the Association of Carriers & Equipment Lessors (ACEL) from 2010 up to present.
